Stop being indecisive!

Curious about the photomagazine my sister had collaborated on with a friend, I stole it (temporarily!) from her desk yesterday. As I flipped through the work, each page spoke volumes about the thought and toil behind its realization, and urged me to recreate the old school charm of its craftwork myself, to take up sewing, to try something new –
it has been some time since I felt this inspired.

And for a long moment it cast away the depression I’ve been wallowing in these days. Maybe the complicated issues that were raised up hardly matter after all. Putting aside the commercial nature of design (I’m beginning to really hate this word), maybe creating art boils down to the simplest of things: Be inspired, and then return the favour to others.

When I was younger, I used to sneak into my sister’s room all the time, poking my nose into the bizarre / artsy fartsy items and foreign magazines that were scattered about. But all of it seemed so alien and out-of-reach at that time, I would’ve never dared to believe I could make such things myself. Now that I’m – unbelievably – in an arts school, it doesn’t make much sense for me to give up and turn back after a year of barely trying.

I still want to be here – there are many people to learn from, classmates and beyond, and many things I have yet to put an effort into doing. So I will plant this reminder in the centre of my mind, so that I won’t start wavering again.

don’t be demoralised by what that loser teacher said. i’ve seen ur work they’re gd. like this for eg
the concept is there. even tho i dontknow what the proj requirements r. i don’t get why it’s rejected. mayb ur style is just more fine arts than commercial design. start reading design mags? or browse design sites frm online (http://www.itsnicethat.com/) (http://www.theartistandhismodel.com/) > by a sgporean (http://www.notcouture.com/) then u’ll start getting commercial design ideas. anything to just get thru this sem.
and also, awwwwww.. thanks! :c)
if my mag is a sch proj i bet we’ll get criticised too. it’s just a sg sch thing. i realised i get more inspired to do work when i’m not in sch then when im in sch. ppl in singapore just love to criticize and put ppl down without looking at how qualified they r in the first place

the sem’s almmooost over! :->

haha not fine arts, i can’t draw! ya lor sometimes for school assignments it really feels like you’re doing just for the sake of doing, robotic almost. it’s only when i do something i like that it becomes fun (and fulfilling also). problem is what i like ≠ what teachers like. but aiya

ok read it! i like this part the most –> “Resist the temptation to get a job. Instead, play. Find something you enjoy doing. Do it. Over and over again. You will become good at it for two reasons: you like it, and you do it often. Soon, that will have value in itself.”

couldnt resist telling some of my close design friends about ur teacher. because i feel tht wht she did was very…unprofessional. i mean for someone to go into arts industry in singapore, that takes alot of courage in the first place. anws they all got quite enraged and agreed tht the lecturer is very unprofessional to say that, no lecturer should mark down students just because they don’t get their style, and “it’s ridiculous when they don’t justify their stand and should be telling them what exactly is wrong and pinpoint every little thing no matter what” and one of my friends saw ur rejected flower piece and she said “i don’t get why this is rejected. it’s interesting!” hehe. so don’t get discouraged from no on. in fact, this is wht one of my friends said which i think u should be doing frm now on “i think your sister should persevere and make that shit lecturer eat her words. the lecturer is not even qualified to say things like that. come on, she’s not even in the industry. your sister should not think of giving up just because of one pathetic lecturer. if this is really what she wants to do, she has to be thick skinned enough.”
wht she said is very true. in this industry u do need to be quite thick skin. when i was in sch. likewise like wht u’re feeling now, i have to do alot of things just to pls my lecturer. and alot of times, i do feel very demoralised abt my own work/talent, the design industry in sg. it’s only after i started travelling, and aft i got out of sch tht i realise tht the design industry in other countries, those tht matter, is nothing like sg’s. so, don’t really worry abt it so much. get over this sem, do well aft tht, show ur teacher wht u’re capable of, tht would be like giving her a tight slap in her face. ok i dontknow if wht im saying helps. i kinda blabbering now. its 510am i cant do phrasing no more. hope u’re feeling better abt urself. don’t let ur talent/passion go to waste :c)

oh also, just so u know, most design lecturers in singapore design schs. (unless they’re specially invited by the sch to join them or for other special reasons) r actually designers tht can’t make it in the industry. tht’s why they turn to teaching. for easy money. yes. and 60% of the things they think r abt the design industry is actually outdated, for the fact tht they’ve been out of the industry for so long. because u know how fast this industry moves right. so yes. don’t bother too much abt wht they say.
